Quantity Surveyor – Nelson (Office-based)

The Role
A well-established business is seeking a commercially focused Quantity Surveyor to join their Nelson office on a permanent, full-time basis. You will play a key role within the Commercial Team, supporting the financial and contractual management of projects across the business. This is a fully office-based role (Mon–Fri, 8:30am–5pm), so candidates must be located within a reasonable commuting distance to Nelson.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with financial and contractual management of projects, including interim applications, cost forecasting, and final accounts.
  • Monitor project expenditure, work value, and cashflow to ensure budgets and margins are achieved.
  • Manage subcontractor packages from procurement to payment, including valuations, variations, and reporting.
  • Process client orders/contracts, ensuring compliance with contractual obligations.
  • Provide monthly reconciliations, cashflow forecasts, and profitability analysis.
  • Conduct site visits and attend client/subcontractor meetings to support project teams.
  • Maintain accurate commercial and financial records in line with company procedures.
  • Identify and resolve commercial or financial issues, escalating where necessary.

Person Specification

  • Commercially and financially focused, with strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Confident communicator able to liaise with both site-based teams and finance colleagues.
  • Adaptable, self-motivated, and able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree or equivalent experience in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or Finance/Accounting within the construction industry (Essential).
  • Knowledge of construction contracts and experience preparing valuations, reconciliations, forecasts, and cost reports (Essential).
  • Proficient in MS Office, particularly Excel, and experienced in financial reporting, budgeting, and cost management (Essential).
