A great opportunity to work for our client who has been established for over 40 years and is an award-winning supplier of high-quality cable grip and wire rope products supplying customers in over 60 countries.

Their products are used in safety critical applications for a wide range of markets including oil & gas, civil engineering, aerospace, transport, utilities, marine/offshore and the military.

The Position

This is an excellent opportunity to pursue a career in engineering new product development within a successful and growing business. The role holder will report to a Senior Design Engineer who provides project oversite and support to a group of design engineers.

The successful candidate will likely be degree educated with a background in a mechanical engineering product design. This opportunity provides a wide range of product design and development exposure and would suit an engineer looking to progress their career into an NPD environment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

•Good mechanical engineering aptitude with the ability to visualise and develop robust manufacturable design solutions.

•Ability to use CAD and analysis tools to draw, model and analyse component properties to ensure optimum design solutions are developed before committing to expensive and time-consuming physical trials.

•Comfortable working and participating in a varied environment which includes all aspects of product design and development including validation, type approval and production support (seeing the products through from cradle to grave).

•Familiar with the requirements of working in a structured APQP new product development gate process.

•Providing design and technical engineering support for legacy products.

•Hands-on approach to prototyping ideas.

•Introduction of new methods and processes with the aim of best in class.

•Estimate materials, labour, and manufacturing costs to assess impact on projects.

•Design optimisation for cost and customer requirements.

•Reverse engineering market benchmarking.

•Compare current products/ developments against best in class or other innovations.

•Troubleshooting product designs, customer/ supplier issues to resolution.

•Provide technical support for customers through Sales Department.

•Support the purchasing department to suit individual design requirements.

•Maintenance of engineering systems, BOM’s, ECR/ ECN etc.

•Material/ Component research and specification.

•Standards research/ compliance.

•Undertake “Make versus Buy” analysis.

•Development of test plans and tooling to enable the suitable testing of products.

•Write and present reports effectively using Microsoft office suite.

•Management of allocated projects to defined timescales.

•Maintain awareness of new developments and innovations in the industry.

•Attend meetings and training courses.

Person Specification

•Bachelor degree or equivalent level in mechanical engineering.

•Recent exp

•Experience working in a design environment directly associated with a manufacturing facility.

•Good working knowledge of 3D CAD software; preferably AutoCAD / Inventor.

•Experience of using and maintaining engineering ERP data; preferably Microsoft Dynamics NAV.

•A “practical hands-on” mentality who has experience in supporting the prototype, validation and production ramp activities associated with the new product development process.

•Experience of working in a matrix organisation with cross functional project teams.

•Ability to work independently to agreed deadlines.

•Ability to interact and share knowledge with people at all levels of responsibility.

•Maintain a flexible approach to all aspects of the job.

•Abide by company rules and regulations.

•Treat all company information with confidentiality.

•To put the needs of our customers and suppliers first.

•Encourage and foster a helpful environment where teamwork and continuous improvement prevail.


•Experience leading small design projects in an industrial engineering type environment.

•Working knowledge of FEA analysis.

•Exposure to AQPQ tools. For example, generating and participating in DFMEA’s & PFMEA’s.

•Experience in power utilities sector; overhead power line equipment, cable pulling equipment.
